A Christian filled afternoon session strolling shinjuku Gyoen National Garden

During my first trip to Japan — and first time in Asia, ever — I had the absolute joy of photographing the sweetest couples session in Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden in Tokyo. It was peak spring, cherry blossoms in full bloom, and everything about the day felt like a quiet dream.

These two are a married Christian couple living in Tokyo as missionaries, and from the second we met, I knew this would be more than just a photo session. It honestly felt like I was third-wheeling the most wholesome date. They brought along a vintage copy of Mere Christianity by C.S. Lewis to read together, and I just stood back in awe — watching them sit under the cherry trees, heads tucked close, completely present with each other and with God.

We wandered through the gardens, stopped on little bridges, admired the people around us, and just let the day unfold slowly and naturally. They laughed, frolicked, and soaked in every minute — and I got to capture it all. It was light, joyful, and so full of peace.

But what I didn’t expect was how this session would affect me. Spending time with them — hearing their hearts, seeing how they live out their faith so humbly and boldly in a place where Christianity isn’t always visible — stirred something deep. It made me feel closer to God. It reminded me of the beauty of everyday faith, of loving people well, and simply being present.

They even invited me to attend their church service while I was in Tokyo, and I’m not kidding — it was one of the most grounding, moving parts of my trip. Worshiping alongside people I had just met, in a country that was brand new to me, and still feeling completely at home... it was a moment I won’t forget. Their community holds so much light.

I stayed after the evening service — which was held in a humble office space — and shared a potluck dinner with everyone. I listened to stories, met people from all walks of life, and just sat in awe of how God moves in quiet, beautiful ways. These two are genuinely making an impact in the lives of Tokyo residents — not with grand gestures, but through presence, service, and love.

I walked away from this shoot with my heart so full — not just because of the photos, but because of the reminder that this job is about connection. That the real magic happens when people let you in and trust you to witness their story. Japan gave me beauty, wonder, and new experiences, like meeting these two, and for that... I am forever grateful.
